In 1917, Cartier created its Tank watch in response to Renault's new Tank watches used during World War I. Louis Cartier designed a more practical prototype, presented to the American Expeditionary Force. A year later, the first Cartier Tank was released and went into full production in 1919. Its design was inspired by the lines and proportions of battlefield tanks, which gave it its famous name. Since then, many variations like the Tank Louis in 1922, the Tank Américaine in 1989, and the Tank Française in 1996 have been introduced.
