Why This Watch Matters

The Doxa Sub 300T Professional represents the epitome of a purpose-built dive watch. The example we have here features the classic orange dial with the uncommon and sought-after U.S. Divers "Aqualung" logo. 

THE FULL STORY 

The Doxa Sub 300T, with its bright orange dial, is one of the brand's most recognizable watches. It was the first commercially made dive watch with an orange dial and no-decompression bezel. These watches were made with functionality in mind. From the burly shape of the case to the application of the maximum amount of tritium allowed by law on the dial for legibility, these tool watches were meant to be used, and the proof is apparent: The Doxa designers and engineers tested various iterations of their Sub 300T in the deep waters of Lake Neuchâtel. It was during those tests that they came to the conclusion that the orange dial was the most legible at 30 feet below the surface.

One glance at the no-decompression limit marking on the bezel should clue anyone in on just how serious of a function-focused watch the Doxa Sub 300T is. The current example has held up well over the years with its fair share of battle scars. It dates to circa 1969 and is one of the earlier versions with a thinner 12.5mm case, which wears great on the wrist. The dial features the Aqua Lung logo, a dive company that acted as a Doxa retailer during the golden age of dive watches from the 1950s to the '70s. The logo is a nice addition to the extensive amount of negative space created by Doxa's signature dial layout.

Doxa was later acquired by the Synchron Group, but this example dates to when Doxa had not yet been purchased, which is considered to be more desirable. We paired this Doxa on our black NATO strap, because it's almost Halloween and we wanted to get in the holiday spirit – plus it looks just great.

What we Love and What You Should Know

This Doxa is in overall good, honest condition. The case is strong with scratches and nicks throughout. The sailboat engraving and numbers on the caseback are still clearly visible. The dial is in good condition with light patina. The lume on the dial and hands have developed patina and darkened over the years. The bezel is in good condition with signs of wear. The crystal has a few scratches, which might cause slight distortion in the images to make it look like some of the text is worn or missing, but this is just due to the condition of the crystal. The crown is unsigned, which is correct for this model. This watch was photographed on a 175mm/6.9inch wrist.
